It is 1995 in Chicago, IL USA.
Jake Cooper is a young Ultra-Orthodox Talmudic scholar well versed in Jewish law who adopts a modern Jewish lifestyle.
He meets and falls in love with Mindy, a Jewish woman struggling through an ugly custody battle with her Ultra-Orthodox ex-husband.
