“Who are you?” she whispered to the unfamiliar reflection of the overweight forty-something woman. She touched her cheek, smoothed her hair—the stranger in the mirror mimicked her movements.
“Who am I?”
Seven months ago forty-nine-year old Rose Henn awoke without a memory. Without a name. Her mind as blank as an unpainted canvas, the amnesia a result of a temporal lobe brain injury. An injury she cannot remember. When did it happen? Where? How?
With the help of her son, Thomas, she has successfully created a new life in Oro Sueño—a private community in a southeastern corner of New Mexico. Not knowing what food she likes to eat, what books she likes to read, her favorite perfume, her preference for anything has made each day a challenge. But a challenge that Rose has met. In seven months she has created a new life, became someone who might or might not be totally different from the woman she was before the accident, and fallen in love.
Her life seems perfect…
Until the dreams begin. Are they snippets of memories surfacing or nothing more than vivid dreams?
Suddenly innocent events, such as a white van driving down her street, send her into a panicked state. When these things happen, one single thought echoes in her mind: They will take me!
Rose believes if she knew more about her past the panic and anxiety attacks would cease. Unfortunately her psychiatrist has forbidden her son from telling her anything. The doctor believes forcing the memories would do more harm than good. Rose disagrees and sets off on her own fact finding mission.
As she begins to piece together the crazy quilt of her past, her present takes on a menacing aspect when a body is discovered murdered in the town square.
Within days of finding the body and reports of prowlers, Rose’s home is broken into, strange items left behind. She begins hearing voices in the middle of the night.
Are these events manifestations of her damaged brain? Or is her life in immanent danger?
The more she discovers about herself, she begins to doubt those around her.
Who is a friend and who is an enemy?
