Mike and Peter get dragged into another investigation. This time, they head into the mountains.
A dead young woman is found floating in the river that flows by the Stewart Mansion, which just happens to be the place the young woman worked. She was the maid for the Stewart Mansion. Mike and Peter discover legends and secrets about the old mansion, such as why it was built and what it was built over. This complicates things when Mike and Peter also find out the previous owners, father and son, were both murdered twenty years apart and in exactly the same way. The murderer was never caught. The last surviving son sells the mansion and flees. The young couple who bought the mansion want to make it into a resort. Murder and greed have complicated their dreams, along with quite possibly a missing gold mine.
Mike and Peter soon discover they must solve other mysteries before they can even begin to solve the murder of the young woman. Everything is so complicated that even Scott and Ron join the team at the mansion. All the animals, including Buster the monkey and Jolly Roger the Parrot, are also added to the team. Mike and Peter need all the help they can get.
